  Coffee and Cigarettes

Coffee and CigarettesJim Jarmusch’s ode to nicotine and caffeine sure takes its time—Danny Boyle, to name one master of kinetic filmmaking, would have better served the subject matter—but the payoffs add up to a rewarding movie. This is an actor’s showcase, and everyone from Bill Murray to Cate Blanchett to Steve Coogan does a solid turn. The best vignette is Iggy Pop and Tom Waits’ give-and-take in a small diner near L.A. The power struggle begins with Waits’ boldfaced lie about being a doctor and ends with his hilarious inspection of the jukebox (“He doesn’t have any songs in here, either”). Coogan and Alfred Molina’s chapter has a similar feel, and Coogan steals the whole movie as he tries to ride a wave of “buzz” that just about crashes right in front of his eyes. Jarmusch deserves a pat on the back for pulling all these personalities together into an occasionally inspired curio.
